Automatic calibration and built-in performance evaluations provide system reliability. Background radiation is automatically subtracted from all counting functions, thus providing a corrected count sampling at one second intervals. The alarm trigger threshold level is set automatically for 2X background (or can be manually set to another desired level.) The counting circuitry has a 1 ms response time to a detected event.

The Sentry 8501 can be used in medical facilities where diagnostic nuclear studies are performed. Since the monitor ignores energy levels of radioisotopes typically used in clinical practice, a patient injected with a radioactive material will not trigger the alarm as they pass by the system detectors.
